Preparing the soil...
Although I have felt called to bring the story of Dr. Jones to the screen for over 5 years now, since the first time I read THE LITTLE PROFESSOR OF PINEY WOODS (by Beth Day), it wasn't until this past week that I began to actively pursue it. And what a week it was!
Not only was I able to contact Ms. Beth Day (Romulo) and her agent, but through an amazing series of events that could only be divinely appointed, I was able to receive her blessing on the project, begin negotiations with her agent regarding a purchase option for the dramatic rights to her book, and get advice (as well as a promise of prayer) from one of the top independent filmmakers of all time. On top of all that, I received a call from the administration at the Piney Woods School (in response to my email) and was told that the school "needs something like this" right now to ensure that Dr. Jones' legacy will live on for future generations.
Obviously, God is up to something here... and I'm just honored to be along for the ride!
For me, the next step is a visit to the school, which I'm sure will open up the creative floodgates in my brain. Until then, I'm working on a treatment for the screenplay while trying to nail down the dramatic rights. Like a sharecropper, I'm just working the soil, hoping for a harvest, but knowing that I ultimately have no control over it. God will either bless the work of my hands, or choose not to for reasons only He knows, but either way I'm working for Him.
